What is therapeutic ultrasound?
Therapeutic ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves, beyond the range of human hearing, to stimulate deep tissues. It is distinct from diagnostic ultrasound imaging.
The sound waves create a gentle micro-massage effect that warms deep tissues. This is intended to help reduce inflammation, increase blood flow, and ease pain, stiffness, and spasms.
We use therapeutic ultrasound for injuries related to soft tissues, joints, and muscle spasms.
What to expect
Straightforward and comfortable.
Each session is quick, typically 5 to 10 minutes, and requires no downtime.
- 01
Preparation
A conductive gel is applied to your skin to minimize friction and help transmit the sound waves.
- 02
Ultrasound application
A handheld ultrasound wand is gently moved over the target area, sending sound waves to the underlying tissues.
- 03
Comfortable treatment
Most people feel little to no heat. Some notice a mild warming sensation.

What conditions can therapeutic ultrasound help treat?
Therapeutic ultrasound is commonly used to help manage soft tissue injuries, muscle strains, tendon and ligament injuries, joint pain, muscle spasms, and certain inflammatory conditions. Your provider will determine whether it's appropriate based on your symptoms and treatment goals.
Does therapeutic ultrasound hurt?
No. Most patients feel little to no discomfort during treatment. Some may notice a mild warming sensation, while others feel very little as the sound waves work beneath the surface of the skin.
How long does a therapeutic ultrasound session take?
Most therapeutic ultrasound treatments last between 5 and 10 minutes and are often performed as part of a larger rehabilitation appointment.
Can therapeutic ultrasound be combined with other treatments?
Yes. Therapeutic ultrasound is frequently used alongside chiropractic care, physical therapy, exercise rehabilitation, and other conservative treatments to support recovery and improve movement.
Is therapeutic ultrasound safe?
Therapeutic ultrasound is considered safe for many patients when administered by trained healthcare professionals. Before treatment, your provider will evaluate your condition and medical history to determine whether it's appropriate for you.
Do I need a referral for therapeutic ultrasound treatment?
In many cases, you do not need a referral. If you have questions about insurance coverage or referral requirements, our team can help before your appointment.
